New Delhi, June 5, 2025 – World Environment Day, themed #BeatPlasticPollution, Delhi Airport proudly distributed over 6,000 seed balls to passengers. To mark the occasion, Delhi Airport gave travellers more than a journey, offering them a chance to grow something meaningful. The initiative blends environmental responsibility with community empowerment. As India’s first Single-Use Plastic Free Airport, this effort reinforces our commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.
Each seed ball contains seeds of Lemon, Tamarind, Gooseberry (Amla), Neem, or Peepal, all known for their ecological benefits. These eco-friendly seed balls, made by rural hands, hold the promise of trees that clean our air, cool our cities, and support local biodiversity. They help travellers boost biodiversity, increase green spaces, and aid in carbon sequestration. And because they’re made by local communities, they also create sustainable jobs and strengthen economic independence, one seed at a time. This fits perfectly with DIAL's ESG goals.
"At Delhi Airport, every sustainable step is also a step toward empowering people. These seed balls grow both green cover and rural resilience. As India’s first Level 5 ACA-accredited airport with Net Zero Carbon Emission status, we continue to set new benchmarks in sustainable aviation and proudly support the #BeatPlasticPollution movement."
Seed balls are a simple and cost-effective way to promote natural afforestation. They require minimal care and effort. We invite passengers to plant them wherever space allows, and help bring more nature back into our everyday surroundings.
A Leader in Sustainable Aviation and #BeatPlasticPollution Champion
Delhi Airport (DEL) is a pioneer in sustainable aviation. It stands tall as Asia’s first airport to achieve both Level 5 ACA accreditation and Net Zero Carbon Emission status - clear proof that green innovation can scale. A significant factor in this achievement is that nearly 95% of the airport's electricity is sourced from renewable energy. From LEED and IGBC certifications to zero-liquid discharge systems, electric vehicles, and TaxiBots, every corner of DEL reflects green thinking in action. As a certified plastic-free airport, Delhi Airport serves as a global example of eco-friendly airport operations and remains a strong advocate of the #BeatPlasticPollution campaign.
